What is the FTTx?

Fiber to the x (FTTX) is a generic term for any broadband network architecture using optical fiber to provide all or part of the local loop used for last mile telecommunications (sometime called "Access Network") . The term is a generalization for several configurations of fiber deployment, ranging from FTTN (fiber to the neighborhood/node) to FTTD (fiber to the desktop). The FTTx architecture consists of a passive optical network (PON) that allows several customers to share the same connection, without any active components between the OLT and ONT/ONU devices.

There are also many variations of the FTTx architecture (left figure), including:
- Fiber-to-the-cabinet (FTTCab)
- Fiber-to-the-curb (FTTC)
- Fiber-to-the-home (FTTH)
- Fiber-to-the-premises (FTTP)
- Fiber-to-the-Building (FTTB)
- Fiber-to-the-Node (FTTN), etc.
